USES

Ginkgo is probably best known for its potential to improve memory and thinking. The supplement has a wide range of uses and has gained prominence not only for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, but for peripheral arterial disease problems with blood flow to the feet and legs), antidepressant-induced sexual problems, hand and foot swelling from cold exposure, vertigo and tinnitus, altitude sickness, and asthma. Ginkgo may help with visual problems by increasing blood flow, and it may benefit glaucoma and macular degeneration.

In diabetes, ginkgo may be useful for peripheral circulatory problems such as intermittent claudication and for eye disease such as retinopathy. The active ingredients are thought to inhibit blood clotting, improve circulation, and scavenge for free radicals. Ginkgo’s role in lowering blood glucose and improving insulin resistance is unknown. Scientists are currently studying its effect on insulin resistance.
